Many wouldn’t have survived “Amelie”. Tiersen made the most of it to clear his own path and compose his own fabulous destiny.

Defining Yann Tiersen in a few lines in a programme invariably means taking the risk of reducing him to what he isn’t. Whether he freehandedly draws the musical outline of a feature film or escapes for an intimate acoustic stroll, the Breton never listens to anyone. One thing is sure: he’ll avoid freshly mowed lawns in favour of weeds. Ambitious, home-loving, prolific and free, Yann Tiersen is so unique that he managed to appeal to Daniel Miller, the mastermind of British managers (Nick Cave, Depeche Mode), and to get signed up by Mute. We’ll leave the rest to the stage.
